What kind of beds can I expect on a cruise ship?
Almost every ocean-going cruise ship comes with two twin beds or a two-person bed, ranging from a double bed to a king-size bed, depending on the cruise line and cabin type. You won't find the two-double bed configuration in hotel rooms very often. Some river and expedition ships have rooms with beds that are either singles or doubles only and cannot be converted. Solo staterooms, found on a handful of lines, have a bed that's either a double bed or a full bed, depending on the line. Beds are generally flanked by bedside tables and reading lights.
I'm traveling with a friend, but my cabin has a double bed. Can we have two twins instead?
Yes, most ocean-going cruise ships have convertible beds, meaning a double bed is actually two single beds pushed together, often with some sort of mattress pad over them so you don't feel the gap between the two beds. You can request your preferred bedding configuration on your cruise line's booked passenger website or with your travel agent. If the room is still not what you want when you arrive, just askKabinenstewardthe beds can be divided or pushed together as you wish. Related:Cabins on a luxury cruise: what to expect
Can more than two people sleep in a cruise ship cabin?
Some standard cruise ship cabins can only accommodate two people, but many can accommodate three, four, or five passengers. Additional sleeping places are either pull-out sofas, bunk beds that can be pulled down from the wall or lowered from the ceiling, or rollaway beds. In addition, dedicated family cabins or multi-room suites, intended for large groups traveling together, may have multiple bedrooms and accommodate six or more passengers.
Do cruise ships have cots?
Most mainstream and luxury cruise lines carry portable cribs (of the pack-n-play variety) forBabies. River and expedition lines generally will not do this as they are not suitable for very young children. It is best to request a cot when booking your cruise to ensure one is available, but if you forget, you can request one on board.
Are the cruise beds comfortable?
People have different preferences when it comes to mattress firmness and bedding types, but cruise lines strive to make their beds as comfortable as possible. You can expect quality cotton or cotton-blend sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers, fluffy pillows (down or memory foam) and duvets, and often custom-made mattresses. Luxury lines pride themselves on their high-end bedding collections, featuring 100% Egyptian cotton sheets, down comforters and mattresses made exclusively for the line. Related:Cabins on a luxury cruise: what to expect If you're particularly sensitive to down, most cruise lines have an alternative of cotton, polyester, or a cotton-polyester blend duvets, pillows, and sheets.
What if I get a duvet but prefer a blanket?
Just ask your steward if you can swap. As mentioned above, most lines carry duvets for people who are allergic to down.
Do I have a choice of pillows?
Standard cruise cabins on mainstream ships do not offer a pillow menu. As mentioned, you can request a hypoallergenic pillow, but if you haven't requested it in advance, take the chance that a spare pillow is available. Upper-category suites and luxury lines often offer a pillow menu. For example, Silversea Cruises offers several options, including various down and feather blends, memory foam, buckwheat, body, polyester, and scented silk. How often does my cabin steward change the linens on my bed?
Generally, your cabin steward will change your linens every three days—unless you request a different schedule or your linens are obviously dirty (i.e. you spilled wine on them or accidentally slept on your pillow). Some high-end suites get new linens daily. Most stewards make your bed every morning and redo it every night for turndown service, so you never have to worry about having a tidy bed to sit, nap or sleep in.
Can I store things under my bed?
Yes, most cruise ship beds are high enough to stash your empty suitcases underneath. Occasionally you will find drawers under the bed for extra duvets and linens. Related:Cabins on a luxury cruise: what to expect
The cruise ship bed is uncomfortable! What can I do?
Some cruise lines carry egg crate mattress pads. So if you are uncomfortable, ask your cabin steward if your ship has any. You can also inquire about alternative pillow or blanket types. If you're really uncomfortable, maybe it's because you're sleeping as a third passenger in a cabin on the pull-out couch; They usually have different mattresses than the regular beds and are not as comfortable. Ask for extra padding to soften the firm mattress.
My bed is upside down in my cabin. What can I do?
Some cruise travelers are picky about the orientation of their bed, often preferring to face the same direction the cruise ship is traveling. They don't like it when their bed faces the back or the back. (Most people don't even realize it.) There's not much you can do on board other than inquire if there's an open plan cabin in a similar category with a bed facing the right way. Better to inquire when booking if there is a possibility to book a cabin with a forward-facing bed.
I slept like a baby on my cruise! Can I get the same bed and linens for my home?
Yes! Many cruise lines - including Carnival, Holland America, Princess, Norwegian, Oceania and Regent Seven Seas - are selling their exclusive mattress and bedding collections so you can recreate your luxurious cruise bedding experience at home. Flyers are often provided on board or can be purchased through the cruise line's website. Related:Cruise Ship Loyalty Programs: What to Expect
